In three songs to poems by Edith Södergran by Heta Aho, Oramo takes on a second role as he also sings the solo. Juhani Nuorvala transports the listener through periods and styles of music with admirable facility. Meriheini Luoto’s music is like sounds in the forest: intriguing and image-provoking.

BIT 20
This visit by Bergen’s contemporary music ensemble BIT20 Ensemble opens with a string quartet from Norway’s great maverick serialist, Fartein Valen.
When he wrote his String Quartet No 0, Valen was sounding more like Bruch than Berg, studying with the former composer in Berlin.
After Valen’s warm, late-Romantic styled quartet Taavi Oramo conducts the premiere of a new Haydn-inspired work by Bergen-born composer Ketil Hvoslef, and works by Kristine Tjøgersen and Eivind Buene, including the latter’s Lessons on Darkness.
‘We are not interested in darkness itself,’ Buene says of his piece, which explores the friction between old and new, complex and simple, ‘but what it hides. That is what scares us. What is it that we don't know about ourselves?’
Waiting for Earthquake & The Trial
Humans and the human condition. This double-bill of powerful premieres takes on big questions and touches the audience. Both productions offer recognisable visions of the essential absurdity of our world. They are stories about the haphazardness of life, of disconnectedness, the uses and abuses of power, of sexuality, and love. We are led to explore our stores of compassion for the protagonists, struggling against senseless odds.
The Trial (Oikeusjuttu) is based on Franz Kafka’s famous novel and Waiting for Earthquake (I väntan på en jordbävning) on Zinaida Lindén’s Runeberg Prize–winning book. The two mini-operas are conducted by Taavi Oramo, who was recently appointed Artist–in–Residence by Tapiola Sinfonietta and Artistic Director by Vocal Espoo.
